Because there are a lot of dollars that run through a remodel or new construction project, Crossover Development Company believes strongly in seeing those dollars turn over in our community. Accordingly, CDC leverages its construction projects to create jobs in our community. This is all the more important since only 3.9% of construction workers in the City of Tulsa are African-American, and 3.5% of carpenters are black even though 14.9% of the City of Tulsa’s population is black (U.S. Census Bureau, 2006-2010 American Community Survey, Equal Employment Opportunity Tabulation).
Construction Training Program
To help address the lack of construction/carpentry jobs going to African American members of our community, CDC works to hire north Tulsa subcontractors for trades such as electrical, plumbing and HVAC. CDC also trains and runs its own construction/carpentry crews.
To achieve these goals, CDC does job training and uses the NCCER carpentry educational curriculum to train CDC’s construction employees. NCCER carpentry certification is a nationally recognized certification that employees can use to demonstrate their carpentry skills and obtain higher pay, so CDC offers this training as a benefit to employees.
